1. computing resources packaged as a commodity and made available directly from the Internet ( UTILITY)
2. the ability of the end-user to rapidly provision the resources they require
3. metering - a pricing model that charges the user only for the actual consumption of resources
4. advantage of exploiting of economies of scales by cloud computing provider
